I need to talk about Jiang Mian because WOW. This boy is the most heartbreaking character I have ever encountered in a novel and I am not okay. He's nineteen years old and his entire emotional world revolves around ants. Nineteen. Let that sink in. The text tells us he spent years in a basement at the Jiang family with no toys, never having seen a live animal. His only connections were secretly brought books and an old discarded computer. Then he gets moved to the Shi mansion and the first thing that brings him joy is a line of ants carrying things across the lawn. These are his GOOD FRIENDS. His ONLY friends. And Shi Jinnian kills them. But here's what gets me — Jiang Mian's reaction isn't just sadness. It's a fundamental betrayal. He says, "Young Master killed my good friends. It hurts... I won't listen to him this time." This is a boy who has spent his whole life trying to please the people in power over him, and for the first time, he's drawing a line. He'd rather starve than eat without acknowledging what happened. Then there's Shi Jinnian. God, the complexity. He's this terrifying figure in the elite circle — "a big shot," not just a rich kid playing dress-up. He took down his adopted brother and seized control of the Shi family. But the moment he walks into Jiang Mian's room, something shifts. He calls him "Mian Mian" — a nickname no one has ever given him — and the boy's entire face falls because he realizes it's just something Shi Jinnian says when he's bored. The power dynamic between these two is so painfully uneven and yet there are these tiny moments where the balance wavers. Shi Jinnian brings food. He softens his tone. He asks why Jiang Mian isn't eating. And Jiang Mian, despite everything, turns around and looks at him with those "clear, watery eyes." I'm not sure either of them knows how to be a person to each other. They're both just... trying.
