There are two scenes in these first chapters that I can't stop thinking about, and they work in really interesting contrast. The first is the Cold Palace itself. The text describes it as dirty, messy, with sunlight streaming in — which is already a bit of a subversion because cold palaces in these stories are usually dark and gothic. But the sunlight is important. It's not warm sunlight. It's just... there. Indifferent. The original Shen Qingyao died four days without food or water in this place, and the fact that the sun keeps shining while she's wasting away is almost more horrifying than if it were dark and stormy. The world doesn't care that she's suffering. That's the atmosphere the author builds: a kind of bleak, matter-of-fact cruelty. Then there's the white light. When Shen Qingyao's Space appears, it's described as a flash so bright she can't open her eyes. And the moment it appears, the whole tone shifts. She bounces twice on the spot like a happy little rabbit. This is a woman who survived the apocalypse and just found her home again. The contrast between the filthy Cold Palace and the pristine, familiar space inside her mind is striking. The worldbuilding details come through in small, efficient bursts. Three kingdoms (Yunyang, Qingyan, Linshuo) — a clear Three Kingdoms parallel. The Protectorate Temple and its abbot hold real political power, enough to influence who becomes emperor. The prophecy about the phoenix destiny is the linchpin of the entire succession system. And the original Shen Qingyao's birthmark — half her face covered in black — is a visual detail that's going to matter a lot. How will she navigate a world where her face is both her curse and her destiny? The author doesn't over-explain any of this. We get just enough to orient ourselves and trust that the rest will unfold naturally. That's good worldbuilding — it feels lived-in rather than constructed.
I have to talk about the final scene because it's one of the most atmospheric passages I've read in this novel. The author strips everything away — no light, no visibility, just sound and shadow. "Liu Fangmei looked at Jiang Yucheng's gloomy face, carefully blew out the candle, and then quietly felt her way in the dark to the bed." That single detail — blowing out the candle — sets the entire mood. We're in a time period where electricity might be unreliable, where candles are essential, where darkness is a physical presence you can feel. Then Liu Fangmei bumps into the wardrobe and cries out, but forces herself to stay silent. The author makes us hear that swallowed pain. Every sound in this scene is amplified because there's nothing else: the creak of the bed, the rustle of sheets, the hesitant breathing of two people who can't sleep. And then the confession comes, not in a dramatic reveal but in a whisper, the way secrets are actually told. Compare this to the earlier confrontation scene, which takes place in full light with an audience. That scene was about power and performance. This one is about truth and fear. The hospital scene is its own world entirely — clinical, bright, filled with the relief of a family whose son will survive. But it's the bedroom at night that lingers. It's intimate, claustrophobic, and deeply unsettling. The author understands that the most terrifying moments don't happen in confrontations; they happen in the dark, when people think no one is watching, when the mask finally slips.

So I finished reading this story until the last chapter (Ch 9)First of all, first two chapters could use a little of Max monologue (just a little). His world seemed silent to me. I feel disconnected with MC in the first chapter.I love how the author trying to describe the sadness of losing someone, it's heartbreaking I'd give points to that. But I wish in that moment we could also know more what he was thinking..his feelings..maybe try to show how the deep connection he has with his brother in the first two chapters..But... from ch 3, then that's when it gets interesting. To me the story fly after this chapter. So if you plan on reading, don't give up on the first two, cause you won't be disappointed, cause I didn't. Overall, this is a diamond in the rough. Yes it needs polishing, but if u ask me is it worth reading? My answer: Yes.
What an Interesting story,I couldn't help but vote for this book, great character development indeed and especially the world background?????????????????????
