wonderful book, by this author. I have read several of her other books and they are just as great as this one maybe even better!

Pros…. The story is creative, has action, mystery, a tiny bit of romance. Cons… so much inner monologue, wasted chapters (ex. One is of a phone conversation), totally pg, it end abruptly as if the writer just wanted the book over with.

Okay so I need to talk about this bandit subplot because it's been nagging at me since Chapter 10 and I can't stop thinking about it. Fu Wang drops this casual warning—"there are bandits on the road to Long'an County"—and it just sits there like a loaded gun. The thing is, the narrative doesn't treat it as background noise. Yun Yin herself is confused: the Great Zhao dynasty has been stable for over a decade, this isn't some lawless frontier, so WHY are bandits appearing now? That question is the author's way of telling us something bigger is coming. And then—bam—Chapter 12 drops this spoiled young master with a jade crown who mistakes Yun Yin for Madam Luo. Who IS Madam Luo? Why does this guy know her? Why is he being so pushy? This feels like a second plot thread being introduced, and I have a feeling these two threads are going to knot together. The bandits, the escorts, this mysterious Madam Luo, the young master—what if they're all connected? The pacing here is also interesting. The author deliberately slows down between the bandit warning and the county town scene. We get farming, composting, braised pork—domestic, peaceful moments that make the underlying tension feel even sharper by contrast. It's like the calm before something breaks. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, and honestly, that's exactly what good plot construction does. It makes you unable to put the book down.

Okay, I need to talk about Xie Yuheng and Su Qingxi because honestly this dynamic had me feeling SO many things. The way he drapes a cloak over her shoulders and says "You forget the pain once the wound heals" — that line hit me like a truck. It's so tender and so layered. He's been neglecting his wife, the Princess Changle, for days because this sickly girl needs him, and yet he still finds the energy to be gentle with her. Meanwhile Shen Zhaoli is out there handling state affairs, making tough political calls about Beiliang, and nobody's draping cloaks over HER shoulders. But here's what really got me — Su Qingxi's little performance when she starts massaging Old Madam Xie's shoulders and says she'll personally cook. She's playing the helpless orphan card like a pro, and Xie Yuheng falls for it every time. His pity for her is palpable: "What nonsense are you talking? Master Su was immensely kind to me. No matter what, I would never abandon you." Bro, you're married to a princess and you're making promises like this to a concubine-level figure? The emotional manipulation is REAL. And Old Madam Xie — don't get me started. She's so blinded by her favoritism that she can't see Su Qingxi for what she is. When Su Qingxi cries, Old Madam Xie is right there with a handkerchief. When Shen Zhaoli's people cut corners on food? That's a personal insult. The favoritism is so obvious it hurts. Meanwhile Shen Zhaoli, who actually runs the empire alongside her brother, gets absolutely zero emotional credit in this household. The reunion at the end with Zhou Qingyun gave me chills though. Shen Zhaoli's eyes reddening when she sees the visiting card — after being abandoned by her sworn sister because she "lost her dignity" chasing Xie Yuheng? That friendship was clearly meaningful to her. I just hope this reunion starts Shen Zhaoli reclaiming herself. She deserves it.
Why is there a jump in chapters from 546 to 575? Do you plan to fix that?
