The dinner scene is honestly one of the most intense three-act plays I've ever read, and it takes place over fish soup and rice. Three people. Three seats. And the entire conversation is happening in the space BETWEEN words. Lu Zhixing is the most fascinating character here. On the surface, he's the perfect husband—impeccable table manners, removing every bone from the fish, burning his fingers without complaining, bringing his wife medicine at night with strawberry candy. But the author keeps giving us cracks in the facade. That burned finger. The way his gaze drifts to her plate. The trembling in his voice when she says his name. This man is holding onto something fragile and he's terrified of losing it again. Wen Lan is equally complicated. She's navigating this entirely foreign life with no memories, trying to figure out who she was before and whether she deserves this warmth. The guilt she feels is real—she literally thinks she might be a scumbag for not helping with dinner cleanup. But there's also this undercurrent of loneliness. When she lies on the sofa and thinks about her parents in her original world, the sadness hits so hard. She has a family now, but she doesn't feel like she belongs in it. And Wen Wu—oh my god, Wen Wu. She's the emotional barometer of the entire story. She's the one who initiates the kiss. She's the one who beams with pride about her achievement. She's the one whose face is identical to Wen Lan's as a child, creating this uncanny mirror effect. The author uses her as a bridge between the two adults, a living connection that makes the family feel real even when the adults are drowning in unspoken feelings. The relationship between all three of them feels so achingly real. Like a family that loves each other deeply but has been hurt so much that they've learned to communicate through fish bones and strawberry candy and secret kisses.
