I have to give major credit to the author's dialogue writing because every character has a DISTINCT voice and I can tell them apart without seeing their names. Concubine Su is immediately recognizable. She's all about food and passive-aggressive comments: 'It's almost melted. You two can have it.' Then later: 'What a pity I don't know that useless skill, otherwise I could buy it too.' She's playing the humble card while secretly fuming that a mere girl has a talent she doesn't. Her voice is sharp, self-deprecating on the surface but venomous underneath. When she says 'What kind of situation is this?' with a smile after hearing about Liu Shuzhao's death—that's Concubine Su in a nutshell. Concubine Ding is the opposite. Calm, measured, dangerous. 'Wait,' she says when Qing Feng asks what she's thinking. Just 'wait.' She's observing, calculating, not rushing to judgment. Her line to Concubine Su—'I advise you, sister, not to speak without cause'—is delivered coldly and carries real weight. She's the one who actually understands the political landscape. Xiao Fu Shi's dialogue has evolved so much. Remember when she used to be hesitant, unable to make demands? Now she says to Liu Chengxu: 'Husband, they say one should serve their lord faithfully after receiving his favor. Since I've helped you so much, how will you thank me?' That's bold. That's playful. That's a woman who's found her voice. And Li Shu—her dialogue is minimal but every line matters. 'I will accompany you, Mother. I will protect you.' Four words that carry the weight of a reborn soul's determination.

This book is so good. Yes there is spelling and grammatical errors however the story line is well done and it keeps you wanting to read the story and not put it down. Love it
