You immediately understand who this girl is: educated, principled, unshakeable. And the contrast with Liu Sanniang's voice is delicious. Liu San-niang shrieks like a cuckoo, points fingers, throws accusations. Her dialogue is all noise and manipulation: "Everyone, look! I told you her food isn't clean!" vs. Su Qingyan's calm, measured, almost legalistic defense. The author gives each character a distinct way of speaking that reveals their nature without needing narration. The crowd's dialogue is also well-done—there's a natural progression from excitement to suspicion to outrage to redemption. You hear the shift in their voices: "Give me five!" → "Give me my money back, you black-hearted girl!" → "Little lady, I was foolish earlier... I'll buy ten more!" It's a chorus that moves with the plot. But the real standout is how Su Qingyan uses silence as dialogue too. That moment when she just takes off her apron and shows her clean undergarment—no words needed. And then the milk-scented buns as an apology, letting the product speak for itself. The author understands that sometimes the best dialogue is what you DON'T say. One thing though—I wish we got a bit more of Su Mingxuan's voice. He's cute but pretty much just reacts. A few more lines from him would round out the sibling dynamic.
The description of Xia Xiuyan's study is one of those moments where the setting does so much heavy lifting without the author saying a word. Let me paint it for you: warm stoves against the cold, a western window slightly open with a green plant beside it, a half-finished chess game in the corner, a small box of dried fruits near the couch. On the surface it's a scholar's study — tea set, jars of tea, bookshelves. But then you look closer and the bookshelves tell a different story: chaotic and worn, mostly old military texts from past dynasties, yellowed pages curling with age. Behind the shelves are weapon racks and even a sand table for troop formations. This room is literally split between two identities — the scholarly facade he presents at court and the military mind he actually possesses. And then Qiu Xinran finds that dusty box behind the shelf with childhood storybooks, practice sheets with childish handwriting, and a small iron box containing leaf game cards. Xia Xiuyan has no memory of the box. This is a boy who grew up in this space, who once played leaf game, who had a normal childhood — and now he's a young master recovering from an assassination attempt, surrounded by weapons and war strategy. The contrast between the green plant by the window and the weapon racks behind the shelf says everything about this character and this world. A single misstep in this society and families are destroyed — Commander Zhang went from respected official to suicide in prison, his women sold, his children exiled. The world feels alive because every detail reinforces the tension between appearance and reality.
I need to talk about Luo Chao because WOW. This man has been sitting on feelings for EIGHT YEARS and I am here for it. The moment he shows up at her warehouse, soaked in sweat, and says "I think your dream might be real" — I literally gasped. Think about it. She told people about her nightmares. Sister Hong laughed at her. Online forums deleted her posts. But Luo Chao? He actually LISTENED. He connected the dots between her repeated dreams and the grain regulations and just RAN to find her. And then the farewell scene. "If you can't stay in Hei City anymore, come to Bai City and join your senior. After buying so much from you, I can at least afford to feed you." MO FEI. You absolute menace. She's basically saying "come live with me" and wrapping it in a joke about food. And Luo Chao's response? He cancels his plane ticket on the way back. HE CANCELS HIS PLANE TICKET. The man is ALL IN. But what killed me was the unspoken history between them. Eight years ago she disappeared without a word. No goodbye. And now they're standing together in the shade, sharing this look that says everything they never got to say. The author didn't need to write a single line of internal monologue for Luo Chao to make us feel the weight of those eight years. I'm not crying, you're crying.
Ok honest review, at first i thought the story was going to be only shiits and giggles, i did not realize theirs an actual plot that will literally get me hooked, I also realized that the author writing improve as the chapters go by so the development got better and better.The start is great, but it will get much better after getting his cute pet and also reaching the kingdom arc where we finally sees some power levels and his strength.What to expect:Comedy.Short romance (the author need to improve in this)Mc suffering from success.TEA SIPPING.GRANNY?.Cute pets (2 of them).
It is one of the best novels I have read. I highly recommend it, as the hero is not stupid like the rest of the heroes who are only looking for women. The hero is looking for one goal, which is to return to his homeland and family. I recommend it to you.
