Let me just say — the pacing in these chapters is absolutely *impeccable* and I need everyone to understand why. Chapter 27 starts with a quiet, almost domestic scene. Wen Ling takes a bath, eats dinner, sleeps soundly. It's calm. Peaceful, even. And then Chapter 28 opens with her rising early for the big day — the return home. The author doesn't rush this. They let us breathe, let us feel the warmth of the estate, let us see Gao Zhi missing the Wen family from inside a chamber pot wooden plaque (which by the way is the funniest detail and I'm not even mad about it). Then the carriage journey — "The journey passed in silence." Two words. That's it. The author could have filled this with dialogue or description but chose silence instead. And it works because we've already established the relationship between Wen Ling and Gu Chenran. The silence isn't awkward — it's comfortable. It's the silence of two people who have been through something together. And then — BAM — the Wen residence. A crowd at the entrance. The family dressed in their finest. The narrator drops this devastating line: "Could they be waiting for her and Gu Chenran's return visit? That shouldn't be the case." The pacing here is masterful because the author controls the information flow. We see the family before Wen Ling does. We know they're not waiting for her. And then we watch her step out of the carriage and pretend they are. Every beat is deliberate. Wen Tingyun's question about her intelligence comes first — small, sharp, personal. Then the poisoning reveal — bigger, more shocking. Then Madam Liu's deflection — frantic. Then Wen Haitian's accusation — aggressive. Each response escalates the tension, and the chapter ends on his line: "Is our home a court of law? I think she's just deliberately causing trouble!" No resolution. No neat bow. Just pure, unadulterated conflict hanging in the air. And I am HERE for it. The author knows exactly when to slow down and when to accelerate, and this sequence is proof.
Let's talk about how this section is structured because the author is playing 4D chess with pacing and I am HERE for it. We open with a BET. A literal wager between girls reading books. It's almost comedic, lighthearted—like, okay, this is a light novel, no big stakes, right? WRONG. Within three chapters the bet drops Gu Jinheng into the frame and the entire tone shifts so hard I nearly choked. The author lulls you into thinking this is a cozy palace slice-of-life and then SLAMS the door open with a man whose mere presence makes officials tremble. The chapter titles help too. "Her Smile" → "Gu Jinheng's Answer" → "Tribute from Qilu." Each one zooms in on a specific emotional beat rather than just marking time. Chapter 15 is all about Pei Nai's internal storm—memory fragments, the desert, the realization that ten years have passed. Chapter 16 is the confrontation itself, stripped down to dialogue and silence. Chapter 17 pulls back out to the banquet, the wider world, and drops the Gu Jinheng eye-contact bomb right at the end. The transition from the bet scene to the main hall is also masterful. You go from the cramped tension of the East Auxiliary Tower (four girls, one window, watching him approach) to the vast openness of the imperial garden, to the opulent Fuzhang Hall. The physical expansion mirrors Pei Nai's emotional expansion—she's moving from observer to participant, from the safety of the tower to standing directly in front of him. And that ending of Chapter 17? "Yixi's gaze shifted slightly—and suddenly, her whole body froze." CUT TO BLACK. I literally gasped out loud. The author knows exactly when to stop. Every chapter ends on a note that makes you immediately want the next one. No dragging, no filler. Just relentless forward momentum disguised as elegant prose. Also worth noting: the memory fragments are sprinkled in like time bombs. We get one in Chapter 15 (the desert, the dried well) and another hinted at in Chapter 16 ("the person she had once waited for in the desert—could it have been him?"). The author isn't dumping backstory; she's drip-feeding it like poison. Slow. Delicious. Deadly.
This story was unique and I also like magic, but there is something lacking but well good and hopefully this story will become successful in a near future
I love main characters full of magic. Loving it already. Can't wait for the next chapter. Damn have to write 140 chars. Just writing these lines for no reason.
