TheDrunkencrater
I need to talk about Emma. This five-year-old girl absolutely stole my heart in the first seven chapters, and I'm not even sure that's fair because she barely has any dialogue. Let me just say this: the moment Emma took Jolene's hand and said 'Mommy, let's run. I don't want to be apart from you'—I literally got chills. Think about it. This child has been neglected for two years. Her real mother hasn't washed her face or hair since she was three. She's used to being ignored, scolded for making messes, probably used to existing in the background of her mother's drunken haze. And yet, when Jolene asks if she wants to run, Emma doesn't hesitate. Not for a second. That level of trust, even in a broken situation, is devastating. The scene in the restroom where Jolene washes Emma's hair with hand soap is one of the most beautiful moments I've read in ages. Emma just sits there, obedient, eyes closed, trusting this woman completely. And Jolene—this woman who has never taken care of a child in her entire life, who only knows how to care for cats and dogs—she's gently washing this little girl's hair and feeling guilty about using hand soap. The tenderness in that moment is unreal. But then Emma says the line that broke me: 'Mom doesn't wash my face or hair for me. And Mom doesn't smile at Emma either.' That's it. Two sentences. Two sentences that carry the weight of two years of neglect. And Jolene's response—'Mom knows she was wrong. Before, Mom wasn't being responsible. Now Mom won't drink anymore'—this is where the relationship really starts to form. The pinky promise scene is pure gold. Jolene tries to explain it, and Emma's reaction—'Mom will get poked in the eye if she breaks her word!'—is so childlike and genuine. The original owner never did this. Never made promises. Never connected with her daughter on this level. But Jolene does it instinctively, and somehow it feels like the most natural thing in the world. I'm already emotionally invested in these two. Who am I, a grown adult who's never even had a pet, crying over a fictional mother and daughter in a church basement in San Francisco? Absolutely. And I would read every word of their story.
The dialogue in these chapters is sharp enough to draw blood, and I need to talk about a few lines that stuck with me. First, Liang Bo's performance of composure when he walks out of the compound: "Ruolian, stop arguing. Justice is in people's hearts. As long as we have a clear conscience, that's enough." CLEAR CONSCIENCE. Brother, you were just caught having sex in a grove during broad daylight and you're talking about clear conscience? The self-righteousness is SO thick you could cut it with a knife. And the narration confirms it: "He wore a perfectly composed smile, looking utterly self-righteous." Then Li Dali's response is pure fire: "You took her benefits and then turned around and bit the hand that fed you. And you—" and Bai Ruolian cuts him off with her own venom: "Flattering Song the educated youth to get advantages while secretly trying to hook up with her fiancé." These two are throwing grenades at each other and somehow both are right and both are horrible. The dialogue here feels so natural—like real people in a small community where everyone knows everyone's business and nothing stays secret. But the line that got me was Shen Zhiyan's mother, Xu Guilan, pinching her husband and saying: "Look at your good son! I worked so hard raising him, and I didn't even know he could cook!" This is such a perfect mother-line. It's funny, it's relatable, it's deeply human. And it comes right after a scene of scandal and manipulation. The tonal shift is masterful. The narrative voice itself is also worth noting—it's observant without being overbearing. It tells us what characters feel ("a fleeting trace of loss in his heart") without over-explaining. It trusts the reader to connect the dots.
The story building is very much impressive. Definitely following.

To deepen the reader's understanding of each character's feelings and goals, I’ll be crafting detailed backstories for them. These backstories will reveal their past experiences, motivations, and personal struggles, providing a richer context for their actions and decisions in the story. This will help readers connect more deeply with each character and see how their past shapes their present and future.

Dawn and Jamal! This is it! Only Miss_B can create such uproar over us. Your ability to sustain us with your talent is above and beyond anything else I've encountered. I can't wait to cry, laugh, scream, and adore Dawn and Jamal. Once again, thank you. ?????
A novel with a lot of potential, it's a shame that it seems like the protagonist doesn't care much about his insects, I'm used to protagonists where their beasts are more important than their own family.
I love the characters of this story so far, looking forward to reading more
