On the surface, Fu Lingxi is just sitting in Yikun Palace, recovering, ignoring gossip, trying to stay invisible. But underneath all that quiet, the author is building TWO separate tension tracks that are about to collide. First, there's the harem politics track — the rumors about her infertility, Noble Lady Liu spreading poison everywhere, Consort Jin and Consort Jing secretly delighted while publicly playing nice. Then there's the court track — the Northern Shu remnants rising up, recruiting troops, openly challenging the Shangyi Kingdom. And the way these two tracks are woven together is what makes this chapter feel so alive. The harem women don't even know about the war yet, but the veteran consorts do, and they shut their gates immediately. Meanwhile the new concubines are out there dress-up-strolling hoping to bump into the emperor like it's some rom-com. The contrast is sharp and it's hilarious and also kind of terrifying because we KNOW this emperor is bloodthirsty. The author drops this line — "in a fit of rage he could vanish in a flash, draw a guard's sword, and strike mercilessly" — and suddenly all those pretty garden strolls feel like they're walking into a slaughterhouse. What I love most is how the plot doesn't rush. Fu Lingxi stays locked in her palace, and the more she hides, the MORE everyone wants to peek in. It's like a pressure cooker. And then BAM — war breaks out and suddenly nobody can go anywhere. The pacing here is masterful. It's the calm before the storm, and the storm is already knocking on the door.
I have to give major credit to the dialogue in this text because honestly, every character has such a distinct voice that I never once got confused about who was speaking. Old Madam Lin's dialogue is pure venom: 'You little bitch! Lazy bones! Are you still not up?' and 'You wretched girl! It's been forever! Is the food still not ready? Are you trying to starve this old woman to death?' She doesn't just sound mean—she sounds like a specific kind of cruel old woman who weaponizes her authority and makes everything about her own comfort. And then there's Liu Cuihua, whose dialogue is even more chilling because it's so casual: 'That damned little brat woke up, so she might as well work. Once we're on the refugee road, I'll find a chance to sell her off.' She says this about a child like she's discussing household chores. The contrast between Old Madam Lin's loud, performative cruelty and Liu Cuihua's quiet, matter-of-fact malice is brilliant characterization through dialogue alone. Lin Goudan doesn't even need dialogue to tell us everything about him—he just 'deliberately smacked his lips loudly in front of them, clearly trying to provoke them.' But when he does speak, it's pure entitlement: 'My precious eldest grandson must be starving. Hurry and eat. After you're done, Grandma will make you big steamed buns.' He's being fed while other children watch, and he knows it. Granny Zhang's voice is completely different—warm, maternal, with that gentle sigh: 'You poor child. You're always being bullied. No wonder your health is so fragile.' You can hear her compassion in every word. And Lin Wanxing? Her dialogue is sparse but telling. She barely speaks, and when she does, it's either practical ('Big Sister, can this still be used?') or protective ('Come on. Big Sis is taking you to find something delicious.'). The narrative voice itself is also worth discussing—it's close third person, staying tightly anchored to Lin Wanxing's perspective, which means we get her thoughts and observations but we also get the dramatic irony of hearing other characters' private conversations that she wasn't meant to overhear. The author's voice shapes the entire reading experience, making us feel like we're right there in the house, listening, watching, surviving alongside Lin Wanxing.
Okay so this section is wild because it basically does a complete 180 from prep mode to actual survival mode and I need to talk about how smoothly that transition happened. The plot here is structured like a pressure cooker — you've got all this buildup with the System Space leveling up, the marriage registration, the wedding photos, the beach trip, and it all feels so domestic and normal that when the apocalypse actually hits on day one, it hits HARDER because you were lulled into feeling safe. That petrol station scene? Chef's kiss. Three zombies, one slash each, heads rolling. And Gu Nuan still vomits even though she's been through this before. That's a great detail — it shows the horror is still visceral no matter how many times you've seen it. The plot also drops this bomb about Chen Qingzhou being the heir to one of Haicheng's Four Great Families and nobody at university knew. That's a classic hidden identity reveal that sets up future conflict — I'm already wondering how that secret will come back to bite them when resources get scarce and people start hunting valuable targets. The journey south is the main arc here and it moves efficiently. They hit Chuancheng and it's already fallen — severed limbs everywhere, that sickening stench. The author doesn't linger on gore for gore's sake though; it's functional worldbuilding that tells us the virus spreads fast. One thing that bugged me slightly: the transition from "we have two days left" to "today is the first day of the apocalypse" happened so fast I almost missed it. But then again, that's probably the point — the apocalypse doesn't warn you.

This story was a surprisingly thought-provoking read.The balance between light hearted moments and deeper, more narrative driven scenes was really done well.Author uses formatting of the text nicely and as a nice storytelling tool.The dialogue is really well done, it made me laugh a couple of times.I can definitely see the potential here, and I really hope the author keeps updating. Looking forward to it :)
