The dialogue in this novel is deceptively simple on the surface but absolutely loaded underneath. Let me give you the perfect example: when Zhao Xuanzhen first wakes up and asks Su Wantang "Whose idea was this?" and she whispers "It was Sister." That's it. Two words. But in those two words, you can feel the entire power dynamic of the story—she's naming her sister as the architect while positioning herself as the innocent pawn, even though we KNOW from the narrative that she's anything but innocent. And then there's Su Huajin's conversation with Zhao Xuanzhen in Chapter 2, which is basically a masterclass in passive-aggressive marital warfare. She asks "Did the Heir sleep well last night?" with a half-smile that gradually turns resentful. She says "The Heir has enjoyed a night of spring breeze, yet here you are pulling a face at this concubine"—which is simultaneously an accusation and a test. Is she angry that he enjoyed it? Or is she angry that he's upset about it? Both? Neither? The dialogue never commits, and that's exactly the point. The narration itself has this wonderful voice too—somewhere between classical Chinese novel elegance and modern psychological realism. Phrases like "her eyes seemed to have hooks in them—a blatant display of restlessness!" have this almost winking quality, like the narrator is in on the joke with the reader. And then it'll drop something devastatingly straight like "the piercingly bright red stain on the bed couch" and you're just... hit. The tonal shifts are seamless.
There's so much going on beneath the surface of these chapters and I want to talk about what the story is really doing. The central symbol here is the funeral itself—Feng Qianqian is declared dead, a funeral is being held for her tomorrow, but she's standing right there watching the people who want her gone plot over her mother's dowry. That's not just dramatic irony, that's the theme of the entire novel compressed into one scene. The dead woman returns to watch the living betray her memory. And what are they betraying? Not just her, but her MOTHER—Lady Jiang, who's been dead for over a decade. The dowry becomes a proxy for everything: power, legitimacy, family honor, and who gets to speak for the dead. The Second Concubine's proposal to adopt Xue'er and Mingxuan 'under Lady Jiang's name to become legitimate heirs' is horrifying in its implications. They're literally trying to rewrite history, to use a dead woman's identity as a vessel for their ambitions. And the Chancellor is CONSIDERING it. The text says 'Lady Jiang has been gone for over a decade'—she's so forgotten that her name can be used as a political tool. This connects to Feng Qianqian's own struggle: she's been written off as dead, erased, replaced. But she's BACK. The theme of identity and erasure runs through everything. There's also the symbolism of masks—Feng Qianqian wears a butterfly mask during her fight with Nangong Li, and he paints her with it, capturing both her hidden face and her true self in the same image. Song Zhiyi wears a 'bright smile' while plotting poison. The Chancellor wears the mask of a grieving father while discussing how to distribute his dead wife's money. Everyone is hiding something, and the novel seems deeply interested in what happens when the masks come off.
I honestly couldn’t stop reading this book, just like the Lycan King. Patiently waiting for the book to be updated..especially because of that cliffhanger.
Book is coming along a lot better now since some changes have been made, quite enjoying it so far, hope to be able to read more soon
