Okay so let me just say—Consort Zhang walking into Kunning Hall like that? Chef's kiss. The entire chapter builds this warm, almost cozy family atmosphere with Zhao Xin dodging his sister's scolding, Empress Cao being gentle, everyone getting along. And then BAM. A palace attendant shows up with a 'troubled expression' and the mood shifts so hard I actually laughed out loud. The author sets up this political minefield throughout the chapter—Imperial Study Companions, Cao Ping's appointment, the balance between civil and military factions—and then detonates it all with one woman crying in the middle of a formal audience. That's not just drama, that's structural mastery. What I love most is how Zhao Xin's internal monologue reveals the full scope of what's at stake. He's thinking about how this position is basically selecting future Grand Councilors, how his father is using it as a trial run, how the civil officials are already maneuvering to place their people later. The plot doesn't just move forward—it layers. Every conversation about pastries and market drinks is simultaneously a surface-level sibling interaction AND a political negotiation. And then Consort Zhang arrives and flips the entire board. The tension between 'everything seems fine' and 'something is definitely about to go wrong' is maintained so perfectly. I literally felt my stomach drop when she asked about Cao Ping using the Imperial Consort Kin quota. The author had me invested in the political machinery before pulling the rug out. That's how you write court intrigue.

My 1-star rating is always removed. This is my 6th time now. The author wasted my time and money. I stopped reading after chaper 830. The book is unnecessarily long, too much (exaggerated) non-sense drama, awful and horrible plots and twists, and characters are shallow.
