The black smoke puffing into Yao Qingqing's face and ruining her white dress—this is the kind of detail that transforms a scene from 'characters arriving at location' into actual lived experience. You can smell the diesel. You can feel the bumpy ride. You can see the ink-wash-painting dress. And the station scene! Lin Jiayi offering cigarettes to the tractor driver like a seasoned negotiator, the way she flatters him about Longfeng being 'advanced' while genuinely enjoying the exchange—this is worldbuilding through behavior, not exposition. The author doesn't tell us what the commune is like; we learn it through the driver's proud response: 'Some communes don't even have one [a tractor]. Longfeng is advanced.' One line, and suddenly this place exists. The train carriage itself is another gem. 'The special train for educated youth was the same as the usual green train cars, except without the scenes of village women and rowdy children you'd read about in novels.' That meta-reference! The author is winking at us, acknowledging the genre while building something specific. The contrast between Lin Jiayi effortlessly lifting her suitcases and everyone else struggling with 'six bundles'—visual storytelling at its finest. It makes the supernatural element feel like it belongs in this world rather than being dropped into it.
don't spend money on this book. it gets he she mixed up as well as the wors husband instead of wife. worse is the wife she takes living with her husband and his pregnant mistress. he calls her names the husband brings the mistress to live with them and the wife allows it!! women don't do that
