"Watch out there's a ditch over there!!" cried James once again but this time it was different. Their class that day had gone to an excursion for the Geography class and so had James with his Su. He managed to fling and pulled the dog back and was thrown back on the ground. "Whew! that was close

The liquid metal barely grazed his cheeks. Zen quickly retracted his Soul Armament. Meanwhile, Lance retracted his sword and followed with a clockwise spin, attempting to cut Zen. But Zen entered a horse stanch and the sword hit the side of his stomach.
"I apologize," Qiao Na Feng said. He was wide awake now and saw how everyone was staring at him with amusement written on their faces.

The dialogue in this book is surprisingly natural. Mi Beibei's voice is distinct - she's cheerful, a bit scatterbrained, talks to herself, hums off-key when she's happy. When she's on the phone with her mom she switches into this exaggerated cheerful tone, like 'Your daughter is practically a little rich woman now!' You can hear her performing happiness, trying to reassure her mom while hiding whatever trauma she's carrying. Then there's Yang Xiaoyi who's all excitement and energy - 'I want self-heating rice! Hurry, give me a box!' Very direct, very hungry, very real. Zhang Minglang barely speaks but when he does it's sparse and heavy. 'Nothing.' Just one word when Li Yan asks what's wrong. The hoarse voice described as 'scraped by sandpaper' - that's such a specific detail that tells you everything about his physical and emotional state. Even the receptionist at the jewelry store has a distinct voice, all professional politeness with 'Hello! Welcome! Please have a seat.' Each character sounds different and the dialogue drives the story forward without feeling forced or expository.
