But the author keeps raising the stakes by peeling back layers. First, we think Lin Weiwei's death is a straightforward murder. Then we discover Su Ying manipulated the whole thing. Then we learn Gu Huaiyuan has infertility issues. Then we learn Su Ying knew about it and protected him. Then we learn he called her barren while cheating with the girl she supported. Every reveal raises the emotional stakes while simultaneously making it clear that there's no clean villain here. Su Ying is a criminal, yes—but she's also a woman who loved her husband for forty-five years and was betrayed by him and the girl she treated like family. Gu Huaiyuan is a cheating bastard—but he's also a man who was told he couldn't have children and spent his life believing his wife was the one with the problem. The line that sums it all up is Lu Zheng's assessment: "Darkness in human nature, broken relationships, and overwhelming despair—all of these combined to create a tragic ending from which no one walked away unscathed. I love this book has a great story line but their are quite a few inconsistencies that need to be fixed but other than that this is a really great book and I will be glad to recommend this book to other people
