Each character has a clear voice. Old Madam Zhao shrieks and wails and plays the victim. Old Master Zhao barks orders and tries to assert authority. The village women gossip in that specific way that rural communities do—quick to sympathize, quicker to resent. And Bai Qianqian? Her dialogue is cold, precise, and increasingly sarcastic. When she says 'I'm not even dead yet, and this old hag was already arranging a ghost marriage for me'—that's not just dialogue, that's a character statement. She's drawing a line and she's not crossing it. I also love the narrative voice. It's not overly formal or archaic, which makes it accessible, but it has enough period flavor to feel authentic. The author uses dialogue tags sparingly and lets the dialogue carry the weight. There's a scene where Old Madam Zhao fake-faints and the daughter-in-law immediately plays along—that entire exchange is told through action and dialogue without a single narration beat. It's efficient storytelling. One thing I'd note is that the humor in the dialogue is unexpected. The whole ghost marriage negotiation has this dark comedic quality that keeps the tone from becoming too grim. When Old Madam Zhao gets slapped by her own husband and starts wailing 'I'm done with this life!'—it's horrifying and hilarious at the same time. The author has a great sense of comedic timing in dialogue.
There's a whole layer of symbolic material running through these chapters that I think deserves attention, because this story is clearly about more than just a princess sneaking around at night. The most obvious motif is masks—literal and figurative. Li Quan is described as "the universally respected, benevolent Prime Minister," a man who "shunned power, never fought for influence, and carried himself with the aloof grace of a gentleman untouched by worldly ambition." And yet behind closed doors, he displays "ruthless calculation," "vicious expression, the contempt, the cold scheming." The text explicitly calls it "flawless deception" and notes that he "fooled the entire Kingdom of Qian." This isn't just a plot twist—it's the story making a statement about how power operates in this world. The most dangerous people are the ones you never suspect. Then there's the sword. Xiahou Jin's old sword is kept in a wooden box, and Si Nan's entire nighttime mission is to retrieve it. The sword represents his past—his youth, his martial identity, the man he was before court politics and imperial favor shaped him into whatever he is now. it's good but not connecting with eachother
After reading 50 chapters I can confidently say that this is in the top 0.001% Of web novels, I am genuinely shocked that this isn’t in the rankings, all the main characters until now have great character writing- the world building is the weakest part of the novel though I’m sure the author will expand more on this aspect. I can’t believe how much of a hidden gem this is and if this is truly authors first Webnovel then I’m shocked at how great of a storyteller he is. I believe this has potential to be one of the greats, I am a bit worried that there wouldn’t be an overarching plot for the novel, I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to come up with a satisfying ending for the novel though I have faith in you Mszrswrite. Also, I wouldn’t have imagined that you aren’t a native English speaker if I haven’t seen one of your comments on the chapter, you’re actually doing such an amazing job on this.Lastly, you really should put a paywall at a specific chapter. You deserve payment for your work, I would imagine locking at *SPOILER* Lucius’s death would be a good place though I’m not an author so take it with a grain of salt.Author is cooking us a 5 star meal

A nice balanced story, the world building is geat and you can feel the characters as real persons with genuine emotions and personality. The action scenes are great, and all in all a captivating story.
