Moyu'er's declaration: "From today onward, she would become a ruthless ghost, cutting off all emotions and attachments." — and then immediately failing because Eighteenth Lady won't even look at her. The commitment to the bit is adorable. Yellow-robed Guest explaining his escape from the Ghost Bride: "The Ghost Bride only loves handsome men in their prime of sixteen. When I met her, I was already over thirty. Alas! I didn't mind that she was a ghost, but she thought I was too old and kicked me off the bed!" — this is the funniest horror explanation ever and I need it framed. Qiu Sese being forced to say auspicious words to a terrifying man: "Fushan Tower wishes you golden rice dumplings, blessings, longevity, and good health." — while trembling and sobbing. The contrast between the formal blessing and the sheer terror is comedy gold. And the narrative voice itself is so comfortable slipping between horror, comedy, and genuine warmth. The author doesn't take any of it too seriously but also doesn't undermine the scary moments. It's a tightrope walk that mostly works.
