He just draws his token, mentions his sister is close friends with Miss Ji, and essentially says 'I'm here, deal with it.' But then—here's the detail that got me—he gives her an almost imperceptible smile that reassures her. That's it. That's the whole romantic gesture. No flowers, no speeches, just a micro-expression that says 'you're safe now.' And then the Chen Shujin treatment? Wang Yu'an literally helps him up with feigned concern, asks who he is, and then just... drops him. 'Since this is an unrelated matter, there is no need for me to intervene further.' The casual cruelty of it! He's not even pretending to care anymore. He's just watching Chen Shujin suffer with the detached interest of someone observing an ant fall off a ledge. He literally calls her out on her class prejudice. 'Have you forgotten? My Wang family also started as merchants.' That line hit me like a truck. She looks down on the Jis for being merchants, but the Wangs are literally the same origin. The hypocrisy is staggering. I'm also obsessed with how Master Ji transforms from terrified to suddenly inviting the princess to drink. The man went from 'we're all going to die' to 'would you like some wine?' in about three seconds. That's survival instinct at its finest, or its most pathetic, depending on how you look at it. And Chen Shujin—ugh. The man literally planned to use his injuries to bring down the Ji family, thinking he could pivot to the princess if things went south. He's not a romantic lead; he's a career opportunist in a fancy robe. And now he's locked in a courtyard with a head injury, and his mother is wailing like this is a funeral. Which, honestly, it kind of is for his chances with Ji Ruyue. Who is Wang Yu'an really working for? Is he genuinely helping the Ji family, or is this part of some larger game? Because that smile he gave Ji Ruyue felt like he knew exactly what he was doing—and that's the most terrifying thing about him.
