Ji Ruyue, the daughter of a wealthy merchant family in Jizhou Cheng, is reborn ten days before her tragic death in her previous life. In that past existence, she was strangled to death by her husband, Chen Shujin, who betrayed her family to curry favor with the rebellious Changle Gongzhu, Murong Jing. The betrayal led to the extermination of the Ji family's nine generations. Upon waking during the Lantern Festival preparations for her silk ball marriage recruitment, Ji Ruyue resolves to change her fate and exact revenge on the couple who destroyed her family.
During the event, Murong Jing, disguised as a young man, forcibly tosses the silk ball to the poor scholar Chen Shujin, attempting to compel Master Ji to accept him as a son-in-law. Ji Ruyue publicly confronts the princess, challenging her authority and exposing the lack of merit in Chen Shujin’s claim. Although Murong Jing arrests several scholars who support Ji Ruyue, including Wei Zizhang, a hidden noble known as Guiyun Jun, she eventually relents due to public pressure and the threat to her reputation. She decrees that the marriage must proceed and warns that any transgression by the Ji family will result in their execution.
Ji Ruyue accepts the forced marriage but begins to systematically dismantle Chen Shujin’s family. When Chen Shujin’s mother destroys the wedding attire and insults the household staff, Ji Ruyue orders the Chen family to be confined to their courtyard under the guise of protection. She ensures that Chen Shujin is injured and humiliated, preventing him from maintaining his facade of a scholarly gentleman. Ji Ruyue also sends a letter to Prince Rui’s mansion, seeking an alliance with a powerful figure who can counterbalance the princess’s influence.
On the wedding day, Ji Ruyue performs the ceremony alone, denying Chen Shujin the opportunity to appear. Murong Jing arrives in a rage, accusing the Ji family of defiance and preparing to arrest them. Chen Shujin arrives late, feigning injury to elicit sympathy and frame the Ji family for cruelty. However, his plan is interrupted by the arrival of Wang Yu’an, the brother of Prince Rui’s consort. Wang Yu’an invokes the Prince’s authority and a state-sanctioned donation for river embankments to shield the Ji family from immediate arrest.
Faced with the political implications of confronting the royal prince, Murong Jing is forced to withdraw, though she leaves with threats of future retribution. Wang Yu’an’s intervention saves the Ji family from destruction, but the underlying conflict remains unresolved. Ji Ruyue continues to manipulate events from within, maintaining her composure while plotting the downfall of Chen Shujin and preparing for the inevitable confrontation with Murong Jing. The story establishes a delicate balance of power, with Ji Ruyue leveraging her family’s wealth and new alliances to survive against royal oppression.
