Well... Just a little... shamelessly flirtatious." That's it. That's the whole emotional arc of the story compressed into two sentences. She's not sure what home means anymore. She's been betrayed by her own family, forced into a marriage swap, treated as worthless her entire life. And now this cold, dangerous man who tortures people for fun is looking at her like she matters. The ginseng soup scene is funny on the surface — Jiaoyue whispering to Yun Juan about what the soup is really for, Yun Juan's ears turning red — but underneath it, there's something tender. Xiao Lanting ordered the soup every single day. One bowl a day. He's taking care of her in these small, practical ways that he'd never admit to out loud. And Yun Juan is starting to let herself feel it. The moment she accepts the dress from Changfeng and says thank you, she's not just grateful for the revenge. She's grateful that someone noticed she was hurt. That someone fought for her. "It was the heart of the man before her—the fact that he had been willing to help her." That's the whole romance right there. It's not grand declarations. It's showing up. It's making sure she's protected. It's crushing her enemy's gifts under carriage wheels. I'm not okay.
Here's the thing about this passage that most people will miss if they're just reading for the food porn—which, let's be honest, is delicious—but the REAL conflict is about power and survival, and food is how it's resolved. These three men are clearly dangerous. They're traveling together, they have a leader who commands respect, they've already shown they're willing to be rude and aggressive (Luo Tietou cursing out the servant). They could easily take what they want from Lin Dan's group. The text implies this—'the hand that takes the possessions of others is shortened' is the proverb they remember, which means they ABSOLUTELY considered taking from her. But then there's the food. And the food does something to them. It doesn't just fill their stomachs—it changes their calculus. They choose to escort the convoy instead of robbing them. They choose gratitude over greed. The stakes here aren't life-or-death in the traditional sense, but they're just as real. This is about what kind of people these men are when no one is watching, and whether hunger makes them cruel or makes them human. Lin Dan holds all the power in this scene. She's the one with the food, the one who decides who eats and how much. The handsome man can order his men around, but he can't order more food into existence. When he asks 'You've been to Bashu?' it's not small talk—it's a man trying to find common ground with someone who holds the leverage. And the stakes keep rising. Lin Dan is getting sicker. Her cough worsens at night. She's weak, she's vulnerable, and yet she's the one feeding everyone, the one creating warmth in the cold mountain night. The tension isn't just 'will they get robbed?'—it's 'can this fragile group survive, and what will it cost them?' The bowl being 'cleaner than if it had been washed with water' isn't just a funny detail. It's the moment the conflict resolves. These men were hungry enough to steal, and now they're full enough to protect.
I read it about halfway through, and honestly, it is a very interesting book. I really like how the Biocores differ from the regular cultivation that WN offers; a very fresh start for me. Mind you, I don't read too many apocalyptic books, but decided to turn this into my first, and it is definitely a pleasant read. I like how the character and book dives into a field that's different from what other books show. he isn't some battle maniac diving into just fights, but there is weapon designs and much more, which is a neat thing. Still gonna read more to see how the character design carries forward, but I see potential in the story development. Although I love evil mc's or unorthodox mc's, I'm hoping this one won't be toooooo cliched.

So far I’m really enjoying this novel. The story is fast paced without feeling overwhelming.Normally I don’t read this kind of novel but I’ve been absolutely hooked from the start.The world building is phenomenal and so far every character that has been introduced has been compelling and dynamic.Can’t wait to see what happens.
