"She's Mother's most trusted servant." She's standing three paces away from a woman she just helped beat to near-death, crying tears that don't exist, and playing the victim. The author writes her dialogue so naturally that you can practically hear the sweet, trembling voice. And it makes your skin crawl. That's good writing. Sang Deben's lines are equally effective in their own brutal way: "You think you still have a choice?" "Our marquis's household raised you all these years. It's time for you to repay that debt!" The audacity. The entitlement. The complete lack of self-awareness from a man who never spent a single copper on this girl. His dialogue reveals everything about his character—his narcissism, his transactional view of family, his absolute conviction that he's the victim here. And Sang Wanwan? She barely speaks, and when she does, it's devastating: "You're noisy." Two words. That's it. She says this right before dislocating a woman's jaw. The economy of her dialogue contrasts perfectly with everyone else's verbosity. She doesn't need to monologue. She doesn't need to explain herself. She just acts. The narrative voice itself is also worth praising—it's punchy, modern, and occasionally wry. Lines like "The calculations behind that scheme were so loud she could practically hear the abacus clicking from outer space" show an author who knows how to inject personality into the narration without breaking immersion.
The pacing here is actually insane when you think about it. We start in the prologue with a newspaper article about a murder, a seven-year-old witness, Ruan Zhizhi researching at a café, then BAM — she bumps into a mysterious man who has the exact same energy as the boy in the photo. That's like three major plot threads established in the first few pages. Then Chapter 1 immediately pivots to her getting dragged onto a bus trip to Yunnan, meeting Chen Jiayan (the sunny best friend energy), and then Shi Yan revealing himself as this untouchable professor type. The transition from the café's quiet introspection to the bus's confined space creates this nice shift in energy — we go from solitary reflection to forced proximity, which is basically the entire romance genre in a nutshell. The cliffhanger is perfect though. She's dizzy, reaching for candy that isn't there, and then HIS hand appears. "Want it?" End of chapter. I am not okay. The author knows exactly how to hook you. If I had one tiny critique, the Li Sichen backstory dump comes right after the café scene and it slows the momentum just slightly — but honestly, it's necessary setup for the emotional stakes. Without understanding why Ruan Zhizhi is the way she is, the rest doesn't land as hard. Still breathing though. NEED MORE.
I need to talk about Shen Qingyu for a second because THIS woman is everything. Let's be real—Jiang Muxue has been scheming against her since basically chapter one and Shen Qingyu has never once given her the satisfaction of being caught off guard. The line 'Jiang Muxue really never missed an opportunity to scheme against her' is delivered with such casual disdain. Like, yeah I notice you're trying, sweetie, but no thank you. And then the performance! Shen Qingyu puts on this perfect mask of concern—'Why don't you go sit on the ridge and rest for a while? Have some water to catch your breath.' Is she actually worried? NO. She's weaponizing politeness. She's giving Jiang Muxue exactly what she wants on the surface while completely dismantling her in the subtext. Meanwhile Jiang Muxue is over here reading every micro-expression, trying to find weakness, and Shen Qingyu just... gives her a mirror. Their dynamic is so toxic and I am HERE for it. One is constantly plotting, the other is constantly one step ahead. It's not even a rivalry at this point, it's more like a twisted dance where Shen Qingyu keeps leading and Jiang Muxue keeps following into traps she didn't even know were there.
