'You offering yourself is not repaying a debt of gratitude—it's repaying kindness with enmity!' I have quoted this line to absolutely nobody and yet I have said it out loud multiple times. Gu Zhuo's voice is so distinct and immediate. He's witty, slightly exasperated, and completely genuine. He doesn't sound like a prince at all—he sounds like a guy who just got dragged into someone else's drama and is trying to figure out the logistics. The author has given each character a very specific way of speaking. Princess Changping is formal and measured—her sentences are complete, her tone is authoritative but not cruel. She says things like 'This matter is not up for discussion' and 'You are extremely resistant to the matter of marriage.' She's a mother who knows how to apply pressure without raising her voice. Xue Wanyao's dialogue shifts depending on who she's talking to. With Gu Zhuo she's formal and grateful. With her mother she's barely able to speak. With the wedding attendant she's practical and focused. This is good character writing—people talk differently to different people, and the author gets that. The Marchioness of Wuding is a standout villain in dialogue form. 'Our manor's bride cannot be a woman who has been embraced by an outside man.' She says this with such cold dignity, wrapping cruelty in the language of propriety. And Madam Xue—'You really are like mud that cannot be plastered onto a wall'—that line is so vicious and so specific. It's not generic abuse, it's an image. You can see the mother looking at her daughter and seeing something worthless. The narrative voice itself is clean and unobtrusive. It doesn't try to be literary or flowery. It tells you what happens, what people feel, and lets the dialogue carry the emotion. That's a confident writing style.
