Okay so let me just say—Xie Xixiao is a walking contradiction and I am HERE for it. The man beats Yelu Jian nearly unconscious, then immediately feels guilty about it and wants to surrender to save his comrades. That's not just stubbornness, that's a man whose entire moral compass is spinning because his world has been flipped upside down. But the real gem in this batch is how his relationship with Hu Shen shifts. Remember earlier when she asked to lean on his chest and he refused? Now look at the Zama feast scene. He literally tells her to pour him wine because "you are the woman your Khan bestowed upon me." On the surface it sounds cold, almost performative. But Hu Shen reads it differently—and honestly, so did I the first time. She thinks: "Enduring anyone being close to him, or enduring only her being close to him—he had chosen the latter." That line hit me like a truck. He's not being tender. He's not softening. He's drawing a line in the sand and saying, in the only way he knows how, that she belongs to him now. Not because the Khan gave her to him, but because he's claiming it on his own terms. And the fact that he can't say it any other way? That's the tragedy of this character. He can be violent, he can be cruel with his words, but he cannot be gentle. The softness is there—it's just buried under a year of captivity, humiliation, and pride. Meanwhile Hu Shen, bless her heart, keeps missing the subtext. She thanks him for "caring about me so late at night" when he was clearly trying to wound her. She thinks her brother is fine treating her like an object because he "good to me." This woman is either the most emotionally perceptive person alive or the least, and I can't decide which is more endearing.

Great book author gets to the point, story line is not long and drawn out. Enjoy reading it ( good luck with your paper) . Need more chapters please....
