The author doesn't even have to describe him as arrogant—his dialogue does the heavy lifting. Then there's Lin Juncheng, the intern, and his dialogue is a masterclass in sycophancy. The whole speech he gives when he misreads Chen Liming's signal is absolutely peak brown-noser energy. "Medical expertise isn't about age; it's about genuine skill." Bro, you just walked into a room and started insulting another director in front of patients. The audacity is breathtaking. And the fact that Chen Liming is internally cursing him while pretending to be calm? The dramatic irony in that exchange is delicious. But the real dialogue gem has to be Zhou Hongmao. He barely says anything and every word lands. "Did you make a mistake with these examination orders?" — said so casually, like he's just asking about the weather. And then he lists out those inappropriate tests with this cold, clinical precision that completely dismantles Chen Liming. No yelling, no drama, just facts. The contrast between his calm delivery and the explosive reaction it causes is chef's kiss. And the female patient in the crowd who just blurts out "aren't those for checking infertility?" — that's the kind of dialogue that makes a novel feel alive. She's not a named character, she's just "a female patient in the crowd," but her line is the one that truly exposes everything. Sometimes the background characters have the sharpest tongues.
The stakes in these chapters are deceptively simple. On the surface: a broken oxygen system at a guesthouse in the high mountains. If it's not fixed, guests could get seriously ill—or worse. That's the external conflict, and it's real. At that altitude, oxygen isn't a luxury. It's the difference between sleeping peacefully and spending the night gasping for air. But the real stakes are internal, and they're much harder to see. For Lin Mo, the conflict is: can she actually find what she's looking for? She's been traveling for days. She's dealt with altitude sickness, weak internet, uncertain plans. She found a room with a mountain view and felt a moment of peace at the hot spring. But then the headache returns. The internet fails. The relief is temporary. The question isn't whether she'll find peace—it's whether peace is something you can find, or something you have to build. For Danzeng, the conflict is quieter but deeper. He's successful. He's independent. He doesn't need anyone. And yet—he's driving through the night thinking about a girl he met once. The conflict isn't between him and someone else. It's between who he thinks he is (self-sufficient, rational, in control) and who he actually is (someone who carries invisible weight, someone who hopes against logic). The author raises the stakes in Chapter 7 with a brilliant small detail: the internet is so weak that Lin Mo can't even research her next move. She's isolated, physically and digitally. The altitude sickness returns. She's alone in a room she just fell in love with, and the very thing that made her feel alive is now making her suffer. The conflict isn't dramatic—it's intimate. It's the conflict of a person trying to heal and realizing that healing isn't linear. And then there's the convergence. Both characters are facing their conflicts separately, heading toward the same place. The stakes of their meeting aren't stated—they're implied. What happens when two people who are both running and both seeking finally collide? Do they help each other? Do they get in each other's way? Do they see themselves more clearly through the other's eyes? The author hasn't answered these questions yet. But the tension is already there, humming beneath every chapter like the engine of Danzeng's SUV driving through the night.
