Honestly, it took me some time to fully grasp my feelings, but I detest this novel. I initially put it down around the 400s and decided to give it another chance recently, only to realize why I stopped reading in the first place.
This book once again manipulates the human experience in a convoluted manner. None of the characters exhibit coherent behavior; their actions and decisions seem illogical and serve solely to propel the plot forward. Even the protagonist, with his problematic system, makes choices randomly without a clear motivation or reasoning. I could list numerous examples, but I've honestly grown weary of investing so much mental energy into this book.
As for the system, it's a complete farce. It functions as a cheat code, granting the protagonist any skill or ability he desires, but the author fails to provide any concrete details. The MC accumulates 'points' that he occasionally uses to overpower others, but the specifics of point distribution, redemption options, and consequences remain unclear. It's all a Deus ex machina, filled with convenient plot devices.
The antagonists are equally absurd. They come across as robotic and one-dimensional. While I understand the exaggerated nature, attempting to make them appear threatening by having them demand an unwarranted display of subservience is just ridiculous. It's hard to consider them human when their actions border on caricature. Why not have them engage in more absurd antics, like public self-exhibitionism, to assert dominance?
Frankly, this book frustrates me to the point of anger. The time I've wasted on it is disheartening. Should I credit the author for eliciting such a strong reaction? But honestly, I wish they'd vanish from our literary world altogether.
I initially entered the story with a strong sense of skepticism, as I have a deep aversion to mercenary, bodyguard, butler, assassin, or soldier protagonists – that narrows it down quite significantly, doesn't it? However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the book was well-written and the author didn't resort to clichés. The characters were multi-dimensional, and I didn't find the female character overly irritating. The male lead also showed some backbone, which was a refreshing change. There were darker themes present as well, which added depth.
Unfortunately, the narrative took a turn for the worse when the focus shifted too heavily on racism, which became tiresome at that point. The final straw came in the last chapter I read, where the protagonist inexplicably crumbled like a weak character solely for comedic effect, despite not being at fault in the situation. Given my experience with Japanese novels, I decided against continuing. Additionally, the presence of a harem element further deterred me. Nevertheless, the translation itself was commendable.
I adore all the relationships in this novel. It's a heartwarming tale of an Omega and an Alpha coming together. The protagonist's Omega status is incredibly delicate, necessitating them to conceal it, even from themselves, through deception. The MC consistently believes they are a Beta due to their adoptive parents, both Betas, making it impossible for them to have offspring with different traits. Thus, they choose to lie about their origins to prevent the MC from discovering their adoption and potentially uncovering truths that could expose them to harmful secrets during a tumultuous time for Omegas in terms of politics and warfare. Thankfully, they eventually resolve their issues, leading to a joyful conclusion. ???
It's probably around a 3.5-star rating for me. The reason being, I find the plot slightly乏味 as the story progresses. The mystery surrounding Lin An Lan's amnesia initially piques my interest and keeps me reading, particularly because I'm eager to揭露 Cheng Yu's hidden truths. I must admit, the early chapters' romantic scenes were quite enchanting and evoked a warm feeling within me. Perhaps you could consider adding a "Early Romance" tag?
However, there are numerous insignificant details that the author tends to include, like dwelling excessively on the drama the main characters starred in. These distractions often lead me to skim through chapters. My main focus is on Lin An Lan's memory recovery, which brings me to the spoiler:
