The author tells us everything happens exactly as Li Wanran predicted: the Prince goes to the Palace of Heavenly Purity, spends less than five minutes in Mistress Song's courtyard, leaves with the Third Prince. This passage of time gives the chapter a rhythmic quality—it's almost like watching a clock tick toward the main event. By the time evening approaches and the Prince "finally settled down," we've been waiting with Li Wanran, and that shared anticipation tightens the narrative screw. The encounter scene itself is paced like a slow-motion car crash. Zhang notices them, her smile falters, she tries to rush Li Wanran away, the Prince appears, Li Wanran falls—each beat lands with deliberate timing.
