So far it’s a decent story line. My only issue with the book is the editing. 4 out of 5 stars.

I need to address the study session scene because the author somehow created maximum tension with minimum dialogue and I am HERE for it. On the surface, nothing dramatic happens. Chen Shuang attends a regiment family meeting. A woman named Zhang Caifeng is slightly rude. That's it, right? Wrong. The stakes here are enormous for Chen Shuang because this is her first real test in the compound. She's the new Commander's Wife with a mysterious background, and everyone is watching her. Every word she says, every reaction she has, will become gossip that spreads through the entire military family. Zhang Caifeng isn't just a snobby rival—she's a weapon. Deputy battalion commander's sister, camp broadcaster. She has connections and a platform. When she says "He never liked any of the girls introduced before. Didn't expect he'd finally marry someone... from the city. Truly different," she's not just being rude. She's publicly questioning Chen Shuang's legitimacy, her worthiness, her place here. And she does it with a smile, wrapped in fake friendliness. But Chen Shuang's response is masterful. She doesn't flinch. She doesn't get defensive. She carries her cup calmly, gives a faint smile, and says "It was just fate. Yanzhi... he's picky." She uses the home name. She reframes the narrative from "he settled" to "he chose." And she does it without raising her voice or breaking composure. The real tension though? It's internal. Chen Shuang knows this is only the beginning. She tells He Yanzhi "Always avoiding things gives people something to talk about." She's making a conscious choice to face these conflicts head-on rather than retreat. That's a huge character moment. And He Yanzhi's reaction afterward—"In future activities like this, if you don't want to go, you don't have to"—shows he's watching, he's protective, but he also respects her choice to stand her ground. The stakes aren't just about surviving gossip. They're about whether Chen Shuang will become someone who hides or someone who builds. So far, she's building.
I love this book ... a must read!!!
