Emma Swan is one of my fave authors here but I can’t seem to get past chapter 4 on this novel. There is too much narration in between convos. Will it get better? I find one or two dialogue in one page and I’m hoping it picks up going forward.

Okay so this chapter had me doing double takes. On the surface it's this sweet picnic date—wheelchair romping, rabbit chasing sunbeams, kids offering lollipops—but underneath the plot is absolutely churning. Shen Simo is playing model for Lu HuaiChuan while simultaneously running a secret scheme to go abroad and possibly target his brother instead. The Wang Jianwei subplot is doing heavy lifting here: he's investigating the Lu brothers, she's feeding him info, and then BAM—her phone mysteriously shows his message as read when she's pretty sure she never saw it. Coincidence? Please. Lu HuaiChuan had her phone unlocked to buy ice cream. He could've seen everything. But the real plot bomb drops when she's sitting on that swing and her expression literally transforms—"her originally gentle gaze turned sharp, her lips curling downward into a smileless expression that radiated hostility." And Lu HuaiChuan notices. He sees her as a "poisonous Lycoris radiata—dangerous yet undeniably beautiful." This man is not fooled. He knows something is off and he's watching her watch him. The tension between what's happening on the surface (painting session, salty milk tea, casual flirting) and what's actually going on (manipulation, hidden agendas, a woman mentally choosing between two brothers) is chef's kiss. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and it hasn't yet and I'm obsessed.
