I need to talk about the cheongsam scene because it wrecked me in the best possible way. So Wen Zhili goes to this tailor shop she used to frequent before—before Huo Cheng told her she looked petty and provincial in cheongsams, before she switched to black lace because he said he preferred bright, flamboyant women. A year she hasn't worn one. A year of dressing to please someone who despised her for being herself. And when she walks out in that ink-wash colored cheongsam with a jade hairpin and emerald earrings, Huo Shengbai basically loses his mind. But here's what got me—the moment isn't just about her looking beautiful. It's about her reclaiming herself. The text says she had been careless and forgotten she was still wearing the black lace dress from the day before, and that she "must be overthinking it" about Huo Shengbai's feelings. She's still operating with old wounds. But then she deliberately goes to the tailor shop and orders FIVE sets of cheongsams. Five. This is a woman who is actively choosing herself, piece by piece. And the Huo Cheng reaction? He's standing there, stunned, realizing she's "like a lotus emerging from water—pure and beautiful." But it's too late for him. She's already in the Maybach driving away. The timing of that is just *chef's kiss*. He only notices her worth the moment she's no longer available to him. Classic. The most emotionally charged moment for me though was when Wen Zhili was falling asleep on Huo Shengbai's shoulder in the car. His embrace carries a faint scent of roses, and it's "a fragrance she liked." She melts into him. This is a girl who was abused, tortured, nearly starved, and burned alive in her past life, and here she is, finally feeling safe enough to fall asleep in someone's arms. The contrast between her past trauma and this moment of peace hit me so hard. I actually had to pause and process.
The dialogue in this section is genuinely excellent. Let me give you some examples because they're too good not to quote. Cao Yang: 'Fuck your mother! You little bastard! Fuck your ancestors!' — the manager's cursing slipping into Sichuan dialect. This tiny detail tells me everything about the character. She's not just angry, she's from the same region as our protagonists, and her dialect comes out when she's truly losing it. The author doesn't explain this, just lets it happen naturally. Li Yan: 'You still want this job?!' / 'Fuck you!' — Cao Yang snapping after being denied bathroom breaks. Two words. Perfect. The escalation from silent suffering to explosive rage in a single exchange. And then Li Yan's response: 'Don't be rash!' — she's not saving the supervisor, she's saving Cao Yang from himself. The subtext is in what she doesn't say. The slot machine conversation is pure gold: 'You want to die? Don't drag me with you.' 'I'm not ordinary. I fight well. I'm not afraid of them.' 'Even if you fight well, how many can you take on? They come dozens, hundreds, with knives and guns.' Li Yan's voice is sharp, practical, slightly cruel but always protective. Cao Yang's voice is earnest, impulsive, slightly naive. They sound completely different, and that's because the author has given them distinct worldviews, not just different vocabulary. My favorite line though has to be Li Yan's: 'In this world, easy money never goes to ordinary people. Be realistic, find a job, stop dreaming.' That's not just dialogue—that's the thesis statement of the entire novel. Every character who ignores this advice is about to learn it the hard way.

An absolutely stunning opening, breath-taking action, and fighting ingenuity. This story is well balanced, though it's a shame the chapters are quite short, but I held my breath reading so far. Have to say the world-building is truly captivating too.

This book raises the standard for all transmigration novels and the best part of it is the MC. She is the best and the most realistic protagonist I have ever read.
