Qin Xiaoxiao, a twenty-something woman who lost her parents in a plane crash three years prior, wakes up inside the novel she was reading, inhabiting the body of a high school student with the same name. The novel, titled The Cool and Arrogant School Bully Falls for Me, features a plot where the male lead, Ji Wenchen, a rebellious and handsome school bully, eventually discards his first love for the transfer student female lead. Qin Xiaoxiao realizes she has become that disposable first love, a cannon fodder character destined for a miserable ending. Determined to survive and perhaps find a way back to her original world, she decides to avoid the romantic entanglements entirely and focus on living a quiet, ordinary high school life.
At the start of her transmigration, Qin Xiaoxiao is already five days into a relationship with Ji Wenchen, though the union was never born of affection. Ji Wenchen agreed to date her only because his friend Jiang Zhousi coerced him into it as a penalty for losing a bet. The relationship is superficial; Ji Wenchen rarely acknowledges her, and Qin Xiaoxiao is content with this distance. She attempts to break up with him but fears the consequences of deviating from the plot, so she chooses to wait for him to end it. Meanwhile, she begins to change her behavior, studying diligently, helping her deskmate Yang Min, and showing kindness to her mother, Feng Xiuling, who runs a fruit stall. These actions confuse those around her, as the original Qin Xiaoxiao was vain, lazy, and dismissive of her family.
As the story progresses, the plot begins to diverge from the novel. During a tomb-sweeping trip, Ji Wenchen helps the physically weak Qin Xiaoxiao down the mountain and gives her a ride home in his family car. On the way, he encounters the novel's female lead, Bi Chun, but ignores her completely, failing to initiate the romantic first meeting described in the book. Qin Xiaoxiao notices this deviation and feels a mix of relief and confusion. She also encounters Yan Yangcan, the novel's second male lead, at a bookstore, but deliberately avoids further interaction with him.
Back at school, Qin Xiaoxiao's improved attitude and academic focus attract attention. Many male classmates request to sit near her during the next seating adjustment, surrounding her with admirers. Ji Wenchen, however, remains isolated in the back row. He observes Qin Xiaoxiao interacting with others, particularly when she helps a classmate with physics problems, and his interest seems to pique. He watches her with a focused gaze that unsettles her deskmate. Qin Xiaoxiao also discovers that a quiet classmate, Gan Shuangxing, bears scars on her arms, hinting at deeper personal struggles beyond the novel's narrative.
Qin Xiaoxiao continues to navigate her new reality with caution. She maintains a polite distance from Ji Wenchen while trying to integrate into her new family life, cooking for her mother and managing her studies. The original plot points that were supposed to lead to her humiliation and rejection by Ji Wenchen are being altered by her presence and actions. Ji Wenchen's behavior becomes increasingly unpredictable; he does not act with the cold indifference expected of the male lead, nor does he pursue the female lead as the story dictates. Instead, his attention seems fixed on Qin Xiaoxiao, creating an uncertain dynamic that defies the original storyline. Qin Xiaoxiao remains wary, hoping that by staying out of the main romantic conflict, she can secure a peaceful existence, but the shifting plot suggests her fate may not be as simple as she hopes.
