Her gambit is interrupted when she accidentally rescues Liu Ling, the Sixth Prince, who is incognito and under assassination by local tyrants seeking revenge for his anti-corruption campaign. Chu Linlang seizes the prince’s carriage to save him, holding a hairpin to his throat in a moment of high tension that nearly results in her execution for assaulting royalty. He recognizes her accent from Jiangkou and a past connection to a salt merchant’s family, though she does not immediately recall him.

Domestic strife escalates when the Yin family, old friends of the Zhou household, arrives in Lianzhou. Yin Xuefang, a newly widowed woman of refined upbringing, is revealed to be Zhou Sui’an’s childhood sweetheart. Madam Zhao orchestrates the reunion, hoping Yin Xuefang will become a concubine to produce an heir and elevate the family’s cultural status. Zhou Sui’an, drawn to Yin Xuefang’s literary grace, secretly corresponds with her, viewing their bond as a pure intellectual connection distinct from his marriage.
