Zhao Xiaogang is the eldest son of Bai Huifen and Zhao Heping. He is described as unwilling to do any work, a chip off the old block. He and his wife were unhappy about the idea of buying a job for his younger brother Zhao Xiaoqiang. He grumbled about the meager meal his mother prepared, complaining there was not a drop of oil in it. He suggested letting Xiaoqiang try for recruitment again instead of buying a job. He is part of the dysfunctional Zhao family that lives in the cramped courtyard home.
