Zhang Daman
Zhang Daman is a young girl among the children playing in Lin Yue's yard. She enforces traditional gender roles, sternly telling Lingling that she must give way to Wanli because he is a boy. She explains that all girls have to give way to boys and that girls will rely on their brothers after marriage. Her comments reflect the traditional patriarchal values prevalent in the village. The children find her explanation different from what they had learned before but quickly lose interest in the debate and return to playing in the dirt. Zhang Daman's behavior shows how deeply ingrained these gender norms are among the younger generation.
