A mechanic from the newly acquired factory with oil-stained hands. He is described as older and stubborn like a rusty screw. He studied at Glasgow College, graduating top of his class. He offers to write to his former mentor Dr. Thomas Halworth at Cambridge and volunteers to help teach Lucy and other apprentices in the evenings, despite lacking Latin and Greek knowledge.
