The mother-in-law of the household and mother of Shen Zi'an. She presents herself as a kindly, peacekeeping elderly woman who mediates disputes and appears fair-minded. However, Su Zhi finds her unfair because Shen Zi'an always ends up at a disadvantage when she intervenes, such as being assigned to chop firewood. Su Zhi finds it strange that a mother would willingly have her son marry a sick person and publicly commit to shouldering the financial burden alone.
