He doted on Shang Ruoyi's mother when her wealthy merchant family could provide him with silver, but once her family fell into ruin, he relegated mother and daughter to the most remote courtyard and allowed servants to mistreat them. He is ruthless and calculating, forcing Shang Ruoyi to marry as a substitute bride for his legitimate daughter Shang Yufu.
