A fellow female sent-down youth from the same commune as Ji Yanshu. She sat next to Ji Yanshu on the train and they kept watch over each other's luggage during the two-day journey. They parted ways at the train station entrance. She offered to take Ji Yanshu to the dock but Ji Yanshu declined.
