A historical figure referenced in the text. He came from poor origins but was appointed as the vanguard of the Northern Army by Emperor Taizong. He led the army to reclaim the eleven northern provinces and achieved great success. He was also illiterate and once recruited 56,000 soldiers from various barbarian tribes with a single command.
