Male, a fellow sent-down youth who worked alongside Wei Nan and Xu Qiaoqiao in the countryside. He rescued Wei Nan from drowning in a river in the summer of 1980. He was about to enlist in the army when the marriage scheme was devised. He agreed to marry Wei Nan on paper before leaving, asked a village leader to look after her, and initially sent her money and ration coupons. However, he cut off all contact over a year ago. Wei Nan has not been able to reach him.
