He Dachuan is a male minor character in Shanghe Village who is the only resident growing sugarcane. He sells sugarcane to Liu Guyu at twelve wen per jin, a price he had agreed to from the start. He Dachuan is portrayed as a reasonable and fair person who understands that as small farmers without connections, they cannot get better prices from sugar houses in town. He is somewhat resigned to his situation, having long wanted to stop growing sugarcane but finding that his acre of land seems cursed to only produce sugarcane. He is married to a middle-aged man with whom he has disagreements about selling prices. He Dachuan is considerate of Liu Guyu, feeling sorry for him despite their business arrangement. He is practical and understands the limitations of their situation as small farmers.
