Gu Jianan is Gu Wenshu's older stepbrother, the son of Gu Aiguo and Bai Xiuying. He is described as tall, sturdy, darker and thinner, in his twenties. He and his younger brother Gu Jiandang are involved in speculation and profiteering activities, which Li Xiuran later discovers and uses as leverage against them. Gu Jianan is shameless and entitled, demanding that Gu Wenshu care for her stepmother and father despite the fact that Gu Wenshu was raised by her grandmother for fifteen years with no support from their household. He is quick to anger and confrontational, initially telling Gu Wenshu she has a duty to care for her stepmother. When faced with Li Xiuran's threats and the revelation of his illegal activities, he becomes frightened but tries to maintain a defiant stance, suggesting they could report Gu Wenshu for neglecting filial duties.
