The midwife (Gu Lǎopózi) who delivered both babies. She lived alone as her husband and children had all died on the battlefield. The town leaders looked after her, and she held some sway in the village. She was one of the few educated people in the village and named baby Gu Yihan, choosing the name from the phrase 'yírán zìdé' (content and at ease). She was delighted that baby Gu Yihan smiled at her immediately upon being born.
