Dad Zong, also referred to as Demao, is the father of Chen Nongmo and Chu Wuwen. He is described as a considerate man with good looks who treats his wife Cao Qiuhua well, setting an example for his sons. He was once out fighting the Japanese and later went out with Second Brother Cao Liu to deliver food to the elderly and widowed in Shanshun Village as part of a local New Year custom that began during the 1940 disaster.
