Male protagonist, Xijin's husband who entered into a male matrilineal marriage with the Ning family. He is strikingly handsome, compared to the famous beauties Pan An and Song Yu, with dark hair cascading over his shoulders. He was once poor and scrawny, starving to death in Rucheng, until Xijin's father saved him and let him work as a shop assistant in the Ning family store. He is usually reserved and taciturn but becomes talkative and warm around his son Mang Er. He treasures a jade pendant that he never removes, even in bed. He is patient with Xijin and often yields to her in their arguments.
