Kept me interested the entire time!!! Loved this book!!
I need to talk about the stakes in this scene because they're deceptively high. On the surface, it's just a couple being affectionate. But look at what's at risk. Xu Zhiyuan is building something—her academic work, her relationship with these professors, her independence. He Jiayu is present in her space, but he's also an interruption. The ringtone at the end isn't just a plot device; it's the first crack in their world. Who is calling? Why now? The text gives us zero answers and that's the point—the author is making us feel exactly what Xu Zhiyuan feels in that moment: startled, exposed, pulled back into a reality she was trying to escape. And He Jiayu's reaction—'furrowed brow, annoyed'—tells us something important. He's protective of their time together. He doesn't want to be interrupted. But he can't control who calls. This is the central conflict of their relationship, isn't it? Every moment of closeness is threatened by something outside. The stakes aren't just about whether they'll kiss again—they're about whether this relationship can survive whatever is coming. And that 'It's me…'? That's not just a cliffhanger. That's the story telling us the real conflict is about to begin.
