The stakes in this novel keep escalating and I am genuinely worried for everyone involved. Let's start with the most immediate threat: Bai Jin. The chapter opens with him being choked by Xie Junyi, and ends with him forming a sinister plan near that ditch in the backyard. Butler Ling detects a Level 12 alarm. What does a Level 12 alarm mean? We don't know yet, but the fact that the system uses a numbered scale tells us this world has established threat levels, and Bai Jin just hit one of them. The conflict between these three guys is going to explode and I need to know what happens next. But the real stakes are internal. Chi Anyu is supposed to be a cannon fodder character who dies miserably. The system keeps reminding him of this: "You're a cannon-fodder supporting character, a stepping stone to bring the male leads together." Every plot point he completes brings him closer to his designated death. But he's also developing genuine feelings for Xie Junyi, and he's starting to care about his own survival. The conflict between "follow the plot and die" and "defy the plot and survive" is the central tension of the entire novel, and it's written so well. The Father Chi conflict is also ratcheting up. He's threatening to cut off the card, he's bringing Bai Jin into the house, he's forcing Chi Anyu to attend banquets. But there's also the divorce subplot—the cheating accusation, the eight years of resentment. Father Chi is trying to maintain control while hiding something, and Chi Anyu is smart enough to know he's hiding something even if he doesn't know what. And Xie Junyi's internal conflict is the most dangerous of all. He's supposed to be the villain, but he's also deeply in love with his target. The text says he planned to "endure it tonight and restrain himself from going upstairs to find that person"—but he couldn't. He went anyway. He sat on the edge of the bed and watched Chi Anyu sleep until dawn. What happens when his obsession and his role as villain collide? That's the conflict that's going to break this story open, and I'm terrified and excited for it.
