The Laba Festival sequence is genuinely cinematic and I want to frame it. The author takes us from daytime — 'some vendors were already setting up their stalls, but there were only a few' — to nightfall where 'fiery red lanterns hung in front of the stalls, blazing brighter than daytime.' That transition from dim to blazing light mirrors the whole emotional arc of the chapter: starting casual and friendly, then descending into something shadowy and suspicious when Qiao Yu follows Duan Yuyan away. I love that the pastry shop is 'a bit out of the way' — it's not some grand banquet hall or palace, it's a hidden gem that only locals know. That's worldbuilding through specificity. And the bronze mirror scene with Yuyan applying rouge, Hongzao crying, the tension of a maid who's been with her since childhood — all of these small details make the Duan mansion feel like a real place with real walls and real secrets. The carriage rides, the street wandering, the four of them feeling awkward together — the author knows how to use physical space to show emotional distance. When Song Yuejiao suggests her brother and cousin 'go somewhere else' so she and Yuyan can shop alone, that's the moment the friendship truly separates from the family orbit.
This is indeed an utterly disappointing waste of words. I made an effort to read more than usual to gauge the severity, and let me assure you, it's truly abysmal. The lack of a coherent plot, character growth, or engaging fight scenes is glaring. The protagonist's unnatural fixation on Baldo (drawing his blade) should've been comical at least once, but the system's constant ridicule has worn thin after 50 chapters.
There's no explanation provided for Baldo's worthlessness beyond the system, and the main character's strength feels unjustified as he effortlessly dispatches opponents. To make matters worse, both the MC and supporting characters exhibit psychopathic tendencies, showing no remorse for murder. Are we meant to believe they arranged these criminals solely for the MC's practice with his new weapon? The MC remains unfazed?
It's questionable whether this transmigrator is truly from modern-day Korea or a bygone era. While society may be regressing, beheadings aren't part of the narrative. The gratuitous violence, convoluted plotlines, and dull protagonist make me skeptical about finding interest beyond chapter 66. Unfortunately, I've decided to call it quits.
A rating of 1.2 stars is given, with a slight chuckle for the system mocking the MC's delusional sword style. Otherwise, it would be a mere 0.5 star rating.
This is an adorable and fluffy read, perfect for unwinding after an intense story. I'm giving it a full 5 stars because the longing aspect is hilarious and endearing.
