Typical kid mc that is extremely arrogant and unlikeable, nothing new. It started of well with the mc background but slowly devolved into the mc being arrogant once br started to get stronger. Killing people constantly with no regards. Had potential but unfortunately bad mc development killed the story for me.
The atmospheric range in this passage is insane. We go from a sunlit courtyard full of wintersweet flowers to a bone-chilling mass grave at sunset, and both scenes feel equally vivid. Let me start with the wintersweet memory. It's such a small moment — Feng Qingsui sitting by the window, watching a kid play with a puppet, and suddenly she's transported back to her childhood. Her sister buying wintersweet branches with embroidered handkerchief money, weaving blossoms into her hair. Feng Qingsui being blind and recognizing her sister by scent alone. This is the kind of detail that makes a world feel lived-in. It's not just decoration — it tells us about their relationship, about what Feng Qingsui has lost, about the sensory world she navigates. And then the memory is shattered by this round, bear-costumed kid rolling into frame. The contrast between tender memory and sudden disruption is perfect. The Princess's mansion is another standout. The description of the luohan bed, the silk carpets, gold and jade artifacts, the charcoal heating making it feel like spring — it paints a picture of extreme wealth but also emotional coldness. Princess Shouyang herself is described in embroidered golden peony brocade, and that peony imagery feels deliberate. She's powerful, ornate, dangerous. But then the Western Suburbs mass grave scene — oh man. The gloomy wind, the rustling branches, the black crows, the freshly dug graves. The image of Xun Shan's grandson bound and gagged in the pit while dirt is shoveled on top of him. And that longevity lock lying on the floor tiles of his own home, with a note beneath it. The shift from the warmth of the Ji household (where Madam Qi is happily eating mung bean cakes and ignoring her son) to this cold, desperate graveyard confrontation is jarring in the best way. Even the market scene has texture — the bustling streets, the barbecue shop, the donkey named Daben that actually understands commands. These details make the capital feel real, not like a generic historical backdrop.
This was my favorite book from this author. It was so entertaining from start to finish, and was incredibly well written. I don't normally read this genre, but knew it would be good, as all her work is amazing. It exceeded my expectations. I am hooked and can't wait for the next book in the series!
