There's a recurring motif in this section that I can't stop thinking about: hands. Not just the literal hand-holding scene, but the way hands function as symbols throughout—hands that touch, hands that type, hands that perform, hands that connect. Wen Chu watches a couple break up and thinks about using their moves. Her hands are idle, observing. Then Xi Liye's hand brushes her nape—'So slender, I could wrap my hand around it'—and suddenly her hands are the site of violation and attraction simultaneously. Then the WeChat Moments scene: his hand holds hers 'exactly like two business partners shaking hands at a high-level summit.' The hand as contract. The hand as performance. The hand as power. And then—the interlaced fingers. This is where the symbolism crystallizes. 'His knuckles were firm, wedged tightly between her fingers; their skin pressed together without a hint of a gap.' No gap. This is the antithesis of the business handshake. This is intimacy that cannot be performed, cannot be faked, cannot be un-done once it's happened. The text emphasizes that this posture brings 'a sense of intimacy and control'—two things that seem contradictory but are actually the same thing when you're Xi Liye. Then there's the screen. Every major emotional beat in this section happens through or around a phone screen. The WeChat Moments post, the Google search for couple photos, the notification bells going wild, Qin Yu's private message bombardment, Xi Liye 'liking' her post and staring at it. The phone is both barrier and bridge. It's how Wen Chu performs her role. It's how Xi Liye reveals his feelings without saying them. It's how Qin Yu warns him. It's how the entire relationship is mediated, documented, and validated. And beneath all of this is the theme of performance versus authenticity. Wen Chu is performing love for an audience (the male lead's eventual real girlfriend, her social circle, her mother). Xi Liye is performing indifference while doing everything backwards. Qin Yu is performing concern while being right. Pei Jianguo is performing warmth while offering genuine warmth. The original Wen Chu performed fear while feeling nothing. Everyone is performing something, and the question the text keeps asking is: at what point does the performance become the thing itself? The photo they take—'Under the dim light of the car cabin, it formed a picture thick with ambiguity'—that word 'ambiguity' is doing so much work. Ambiguous in every sense: is this real or not? Is it romantic or manipulative? Is Wen Chu falling for him or is she just really good at her job? The image captures everything and reveals nothing, which is exactly what this relationship is.
Amazing book ! Good and easy to read, thrilling till the end.
This book was a good read
When everyone is at the edge of their seats waiting for part2 you know the book is good. Continued greatness from this author. I suggest that while you wait you go and read all of Author Muse books if you have not already. All her books are amazing. Thank you Muse for this amazing story ;)
Love the stories. Please keep the uploading consistent
loving it so far
Not my favorite chapter. It thought it was silly because we were all involved her present. ... But there a sweet and beautiful moment with Izzy and her Mom. I loved
I love this story. Karen Miller is so well written.
Don’t read it!! The story starts off magnificent however it just gets cut off mid story with loose ends everywhere.
Damn. Definitely not easy for Kacie to be facing such problems. I wonder how would Viktor react if another guy would be seducing his mate, just as what Clara has been doing to him XD Great writing btw, I like the story so far.
Let me just say — Luo Mingzhong is the worst. And the most interesting. Because the author is doing something really clever with him. He's not a cartoon villain. He's a man who genuinely believes he's the victim here. Think about it. He comes home after five years of cold war, finds his wife making scenes at the political commissar's office, and his immediate reaction is: she's trying to manipulate me into bed. So he does exactly that — aggressively, violently — and then when she cries, HE feels wronged. "Isn't this what you wanted?" The man has zero self-awareness. And that's what makes him so frustrating to read about. But here's the thing that got me — when he comes home and the house is empty, he sits on the sofa, haggard, with dark circles under his eyes. He hasn't eaten. He drinks himself half-blind at Zhao Qiang's house. And Zhao Qiang says things like "Think about how much grievance your wife has suffered" and Luo Mingzhong can't even defend himself. His mother is even worse. She's literally asking if Chen Xiaodong is his son, then immediately saying "that's good, it'll be easier to divorce." She's already planning for him to marry Wen Ning and have a real grandson. The whole family has been complicit in making Jiang Mingyue's life hell. And Jiang Mingyue herself — the transformation is breathtaking. Five years of being walked on, and then BAM, she's slapping Wen Ning twice and walking out with her daughter. The moment she says "I disgust you" to Luo Mingzhong, you know she's truly done. She's not bargaining anymore. She's not trying to make him see her. She's already grieved and moved on. The family dynamics are also fascinating. Her father Jiang Changxing is distant, disappointed in her marriage. Her mother Zhao Xuelan is loving but fragile. And those five siblings — each with their own tragic arc — this is going to be a whole ensemble story.
Great book so far when I started book it said completed so why has it got to be continued??
