This might be my favorite Cassandra M book yet…and I’ve read them all! You just can’t help but love the characters. I can’t wait for her next book!
Very easy read and entertaining to escape for a few hours. You’ll notice some editing errors but truly overlook and enjoy the author’s ability to move the story line quickly and throughly. An enjoyable read

The stakes in this story are so much higher than they first appear. On the surface, Ning Xin was injured, her family is dealing with the aftermath, there's conflict with relatives. But the real stakes are about identity, legacy, and survival. The recipe book revelation is a perfect example - it's not just about a cookbook, it's about what Ning Xin thought she knew about her father, about her family history, about her place in this world. If the recipe book was a lie, then what else is a lie? What else has she been building her understanding on? And then there's the courtyard, the property their father built, the restaurant he donated, the life he created. All of this is at risk of being taken away, just like in the original story. The conflict isn't just external - it's internal, it's about who Ning Xin is, what she believes, what she's fighting for. The grandmother's promise to protect her, the brother's terrible cooking but genuine effort, the uncle-in-law trying to keep the peace - these are all stakes in their own right. If Ning Xin fails, she doesn't just lose her life, she loses her family, her home, her understanding of who she is. The author is playing with multiple layers of conflict here, and each one feels real and urgent. I'm invested.
