Okay so I need to talk about Liao Sheng because this guy is genuinely fascinating in these chapters. On the surface he's just being a helpful childhood friend, but watch how he acts around Cheng Ning versus everyone else. He's usually described as brash and careless, right? But the moment Cheng Ning shows up, he's carefully cleaning her side of the heated bed, running his hand over it to check if it's clean. The other guys are literally stunned. One roommate even thinks: *That was Liao Sheng—usually brash and careless, now acting so cautious and attentive toward a girl?* And then the quilt situation unfolds and it's peak comedic tension. He offers Han Dongyuan's quilt to Cheng Ning, immediately regrets it, then tries to backtrack by offering his own, and Cheng Ning just... accepts it all with zero embarrassment. Meanwhile the entire dorm is watching this train wreck unfold. Ma Tingting's face shifts endlessly—she clearly has feelings for Liao Sheng and Cheng Ning's arrival is throwing her off completely. But here's what really got me: Cheng Ning's explanation to Ma Tingting. She's so careful and deliberate about it. She clarifies the relationship, emphasizes that Han Dongyuan would never date anyone here, basically tries to protect Liao Sheng's romantic prospects while also protecting herself from gossip. She's playing this delicate social dance with the precision of someone who's lived through rumors and consequences before. The line where she says *Comrade Liao is careful. Otherwise, why would he insist on lending me Comrade Han's quilt instead of his own? It's precisely to avoid suspicion*—she's turning the whole situation around and making it clear she's aware of the optics. This girl is sharp.

What a delightful novel! It offers a fresh twist on the conventional narrative style. The storytelling flow and setting are truly unique, something I haven't encountered before. As we progressed through the tale, we experienced it alongside a shared readership that initially had reservations about the main character. However, gradually, we gained insight into his perspective, discovering his kind-hearted nature and understanding how unfortunate circumstances and misperceptions led to his misinterpretation.
I'm giving this a full 5-star rating! I have a soft spot for stories with a weak protagonist, and this novel truly embraced that theme. The absence of a tragedy tag was actually a pleasant surprise, rather than a letdown – it felt like hitting the jackpot. However, there were moments of confusion, like when the male lead (ML) rapes the main character (MC), and the MC ends up blaming himself. While empathy can be exploited, there should be more explanation for the ML's actions, especially since it's a serious issue. The lack of consistency in the MC's PTSD triggers is confusing, considering both the parents and the ML mistreated him.
Despite these points, I genuinely enjoyed the story. I found reviews that seemed unfair, which prompted me to share my thoughts. The story might be slow at times, but that's part of its charm – it offers realism amidst the fictional narrative. If the story were too over-the-top, it might lose its depth. The novel shines in its portrayal of human complexity, even if it means exploring difficult emotions.
Regarding the MC's health issues, I'm unsure about the specific illnesses causing vomiting, memory loss, and dementia, but it seems like a combination. His short-term memory loss, alcohol consumption, and occasional smoking are mentioned.
Both MC and ML could benefit from therapy. I also hope for the antagonist, Ji-min's stalker, to be dealt with. The MC's genuine concern for Ji-min's well-being is admirable, whereas the antagonist's behavior is despicable, though it's challenging to find words to describe just how terrible he is.
As for the siblings and their girlfriend, I don't have a favorable impression of them. Their portrayal of the MC in a demeaning way is off-putting. Imagine if someone wrote a story about your loved one in such a way – it'd be infuriating.
Overall, I empathize with MC and Ji-min's struggles, though the ML's actions raise questions. The story isn't toxic in my view, and I appreciate the author and translator for their work. I hope the ending is not rushed and that we get a satisfying conclusion. Thank you!
